AP police seize 935 kg of ganja, arrested 13

Vijayawada: Acting on a tip-off, Sabbavaram police have busted a ganja (cannabis) smuggling racket, seized 912 kilograms of ganja and arrested two smugglers. The operation was carried out on Saturday at around 3 pm at the Gullepalli junction in Sabbavaram, Anakapalli district.

Learning about the smuggling activity, Sabbavaram police station inspector Pinninti Ramana deputed SI Dhananjay and his team to conduct vehicle checks in the area. During a check, a truck traveling from Kothavalasa to Sabbavaram was stopped and searched. Upon inspection, the police found 456 packets of ganja, each weighing 2 kg, totaling 912 kg, in the truck and seized it. The estimated value of the seized drugs is around Rs 45.6 lakh.

Police identified the lorry driver as A1, his helper as A2 and arrested them on the spot. The police also seized the truck, worth approximately Rs 10 lakh, and four cell phones from the accused. The police have also identified five more accused, A3 to A7, who are currently absconding. A3 and A5 are identified as the forward links, while A6 and A7 are the backward links in the drug supply chain. The total value of the seized property, including the drugs and the lorry, amounts to approximately Rs 55.75 lakh. The case has been registered under NDPS Act-1985 at Sabbavaram police station and the investigation is ongoing, said the police.

In Vijayawada, the NTR district police have arrested 11 ganja smugglers, seized 23.5 kg of ganja and two stolen motorbikes worth Rs 2.5 lakh from their possession on Monday. The arrested persons were identified as Konda Ramesh, 25, Guravarthi Nagaraju, 20, Sk Siddique Hussein Basha, 21, Pasupuleti Venkatesh, 24, Nelaturi Praveen, 22, Suman Bishoi, 28, Sagar Jain, 32, and Pathan Zia Khan, 20, belonging to NTR, Krishna, Eluru districts and Koraput district of Odisha.

Disclosing the case details to media persons, the west zone DCP (law and order) T. Hari Krishna said the police had acted on a tip-off, arrested the accused at various places under Kothapet and Patamata police station limits and seized the ganja. The police said the accused, addicted to vices and seeking to earn easy money, have been procuring ganja at low prices from tribal people in agency areas in Odisha and selling it to youth in Vijayawada. Five of the accused have already served jail terms in ganja smuggling cases, came out on bail and restarted ganja smuggling, the police added.
