AP to build 7 lakh houses this year, says housing minister

Vijayawada: Housing Minister Kolusu Parthasarathy said on Thursday that the state would build seven lakh houses under the scheme to help the poor this year with financial assistance from the Centre as well. As per estimates, 11 lakh people in AP are homeless.

“Action will be taken to construct 1.55 lakh houses in the next 100 days. By 2029, the state government will have readied a house for every homeless family,” he said.

The minister alleged that while the central government sanctioned funds to AP for construction of 21 lakh houses since 2016, the previous government that came to power in 2019 constructed only 6.8 lakh houses. “We are aiming to complete the rest of the houses.”

Parthasarathy the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY) 2.0 would commence from March next year. For this, the state government would hold Grama Sabhas to identify the families that do not have their own house, he said.

Parthasarathy said the government would sanction houses or house sites for all eligible people and release pending bills. “We would provide infrastructure facilities such as internal roads and drinking water tap connections to such houses. We would use funds from the AMRUT scheme in the urban areas. They would get drinking water tap connections under the Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM),” he explained.

The minister visited various housing layouts in the Mylavaram assembly constituency along with MLA Vasantha Prasad on Thursday. He inspected the Gajulapeta layout and later proceeded to Elaprolu under the Kondapalli municipality, Pooragattu of Mylavaram mandal and the G Konuduru layout.

He and the MLA interacted with the housing scheme beneficiaries and enquired with them about the infrastructure facilities.

Parthasarathy alleged that the YSRC government diverted `4,500 crore sanctioned by the central government for housing in AP. This diversion of funds caused delays and stalled the progress of housing activities in the past five years, he said,.

As per a suggestion from MLA Prasad, the minister advised the housing beneficiaries to use fly ash to level the sites instead of soil and sand. Housing special chief secretary Ajay Jain and others accompanied the minister on his visits
