Areas abutting city's Budameru canal submerged in floodwaters

Vijayawada: Many areas in the city were submerged in the aftermath of heavy rains that lashed NTR and Krishna districts in the last two days.

Floodwaters from the overflowing Budameru canal engulfed New Rajarajeshwari Pet, Ajith Singh Nagar, Prakash Nagar, Pipul Road, Devi Nagar, Rayanapadu and other areas in the central constituency as also the west.

Thousands of houses were flooded. The police, municipal and revenue authorities carried out rescue operations, evacuated people stranded in buildings and shifted them to safe places or relief centres.

Residents of the affected areas complained that the authorities did not issue a flood alert or warning on the possibility of overflow of the Budameru stream.

“Around 8am on Sunday, floodwaters from the Budameru stream started entering our homes. In no time, all our household belongings and several house were submerged in waist-deep water. The water level was rising gradually,” said Archana, a resident of Ajith Singh Nagar.

Residents said the unprecedented flooding occurred after a hiatus of two decades. The Budameru canal overflowed last in 2005 and submerged parts of Vijayawada city.

This time, the Railway under-bridge at the Ajith Singh Nagar flyover and the Rythu Bazaar there were submerged in floodwaters.

In view of the heavy inflows into the Budameru canal, the authorities released 30,000 cusecs of floodwaters downstream by lifting 11 head regulator gates. With flood waters overflowing onto the railway tracks at the Rayanapadu railway station, the authorities stopped a train at the station.

Excess water from Velagaleru and Ramikeru streams entered Budameru canal due to breaches and this led to the canal’s overflow, submerging many parts of Vijayawada central and west constituencies.

Local MP Kesineni Sivanath (Chinni), along with the district administration, assessed the floodwater situation and rescue operations in the affected areas.
