Tirupati: Assault on female intern at SVIMS triggers protest

TIRUPATI: The ‘assault’ on a female medical intern at the Sri Venkateswara Institute of Medical Sciences (SVIMS) here has ignited passions and the resident doctors held a protest demanding enhanced security and better working conditions.

The incident took place on Saturday afternoon.A patient, Bangarraju from Bobbili in Vizianagaram district pushed an on-duty intern, causing her minor injury. He was apparently in a semi-conscious state.

Bangarraju, an epileptic, was on a pilgrimage to Tirumala. He was first admitted to TTD’s Aswini Hospital in Tirumala and transferred to SVIMS on Saturday afternoon.

“He was diagnosed with a conversion disorder and unconscious upon arrival at the hospital. He briefly regained consciousness during the treatment and assaulted the doctor before collapsing again," SVIMS director and vice chancellor Dr RRV Kumar told Deccan Chronicle.

"The patient is currently on a ventilator and cardiac support. His condition is critical,” Kumar said.

Resident doctors of SVIMS were already protesting in solidarity with the doctors in Kolkata following the murder of a female resident doctor there. They resumed their duties following the Supreme Court's advice but continued their protest, demanding better working conditions and security at SVIMS.

Saturday's incident heightened these tensions. The doctors stage a sit-in protest outside the casualty building until early Sunday morning.

The doctors sought a written assurance from TTD executive officer on strengthening of security at the hospital. However, late-night talks between TTD joint executive officer Gowthami resulted in a partial suspension of the protest. Doctors said they would handle only emergency cases until their demands are met.

EO, Syamala Rao, is likely to hold a meeting on Monday to address grievances.
