Successful surgery for Achalasia Cardia at Guntur GGH

Vijayawada: Dr. Yashaswi Ramana, the superintendent of Guntur Government General Hospital (GGH), announced the successful surgical treatment of a 45-year-old woman named Mahalakshmi from Machilipatnam, who had been suffering from achalasia cardia for the past four years. This rare oesophageal disorder caused her significant difficulties, including trouble swallowing, food getting stuck in her throat, and frequent vomiting.

Mahalakshmi underwent a laparoscopic procedure known as Heller myotomy with fundoplication, performed by a skilled team from the Surgical Gastroenterology Department, led by Dr. Ande Koti Venkateswara Rao. The operation was conducted with the support of various medical staff, including anaesthesiologists and nursing personnel, under the supervision of the superintendent.

Achalasia cardia is characterised by the failure of the lower oesophageal sphincter to relax properly, leading to severe swallowing difficulties and potential nutritional deficiencies. The condition is relatively rare but can significantly impact the quality of life for those affected. Symptoms often include chest pain, regurgitation of food, and weight loss due to malnutrition.

The superintendent expressed pride in the hospital’s capabilities to handle complex cases like Mahalakshmi’s and emphasised the importance of teamwork in achieving successful outcomes. Following the surgery, Mahalakshmi expressed her gratitude towards the medical team for their dedication and skill, stating that she felt relieved and hopeful for a better quality of life post-treatment.
