Call to Conduct Sickle Cell Anaemia Screening for 10 Lakh People
Vijayawada:Health commissioner C. Hari Kiran directed the health authorities to complete the screening for sickle cell anaemia for the remaining 10 lakh individuals out of the targeted 19 lakh in the state, as screening for 9 lakh has already been completed.
The commissioner held a review meeting here on Thursday with senior officials from Tribal Welfare, School Education, and Women Development & Child Welfare departments on the implementation of the National Sickle Cell Anaemia Elimination Mission, as well as the National Health Mission.
Speaking on the occasion, he emphasised the need to screen 13,000 students newly admitted to tribal welfare residential schools in the state. He mentioned that screening for sickle cell anaemia is ongoing in Zilla Parishad schools, Mandal Parishad primary schools, government primary schools, junior colleges, degree colleges, polytechnic institutes, and engineering colleges across nine districts. He stressed the importance of prioritising screening for young individuals under the marriageable age of 21.
