Cargo handling operations affected due to cyclone
Kakinada: Cargo handling operations were disrupted at Anchorage port on Saturday due to a depression in the Bay of Bengal and winds ranging from 46 to 50 km/h. Twelve ships were anchored, and rice loading onto eight ships was halted due to foul weather. Rice load barges were anchored at nearby jetties, and workers were instructed to suspend handling duties. The anchored ships also experienced heavy shaking due to strong winds at sea.
Throughout the day, Kakinada District experienced overcast skies and intermittent rains, affecting normal life. Officials from the agriculture and revenue departments in Konaseema District took proactive measures to inform farmers about the depression and advised them to move their harvested paddy to safer locations. Konaseema District Collector R. Mahesh Kumar urged farmers to store their harvest in nearby rice mills and delay further harvesting for three days. Farmers were offered tarpaulins from the civil supplies department for protection.
The East Godavari District Civil Supplies Manager, T. Radhika, also advised farmers to shift their drying paddy to rice mills immediately. She confirmed that the district administration had procured 157,700 metric tonnes of paddy, with Rs. 300.64 crores paid to farmers so far. Farmers experiencing issues with procurement could contact the control room at 8309432487 or 9441692275.
