Cargo ops at Kakinada Port to resume today

Kakinada: Cargo handling operations at the anchorage port, suspended for three days due to strong winds caused by a depression in the Bay of Bengal, will resume today, said Port Officer Dharma Sasta. Officials had previously cautioned shipping trade and barge workers against venturing into the sea, given the turbulent weather conditions.

Kakinada and Konaseema districts experienced rainfall on Sunday, prompting farmers to cover harvested paddy with tarpaulins. Konaseema District Collector T. Nishanthi instructed rice millers to purchase paddy from farmers regardless of moisture content, ensuring they receive the minimum support price (MSP). She directed revenue officials to oversee procurement processes and set up control rooms at the mandal level. Drone technology has also been deployed to monitor paddy purchases in Kapileswarapuram mandal.
The region recorded an average rainfall of 40.1 mm, with Katrenikona receiving the highest at 110.2 mm and Atreyapuram the lowest at 2.6 mm.
Agriculture Department officials have advised farmers not to harvest crops before further rains and to use measures such as mixing salt with heaps of harvested paddy to mitigate losses. For waterlogged fields, they recommended draining water and drying discoloured paddy to use as boiled rice.
