President Murmu mentions Polavaram in her speech at Parliament

International experts will visit the project site on Saturday for holding discussions.

Vijayawada: President Droupadi Murmu declared in Parliament that the centre is committed to expedite the completion of Polavaram irrigation project in Andhra Pradesh.

Addressing a joint session of the Parliament in New Delhi on Friday ahead of the Union Budget’s presentation in both the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha on February 1, President Murmu underlined that the centre has sanctioned an additional Rs 12,000 crore for expeditious completion of the Polavaram project.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and other members of the Parliament, including union finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman, welcomed this statement of the President’s with thumping of the benches.

After the TD-led NDA alliance government assumed power in Andhra Pradesh during June 2024, Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu has been paying more attention to expediting the execution of the Polavaram project. The CM has gone on to fix 2027 as the deadline for completion of the project.

Accordingly, the AP government, along with other stakeholder agencies, including Polavaram Project Authority and Central Water Commission, have been striving hard to take up the works.

As part of it, a two-member team of international experts is to visit the project site on Saturday. The team will hold discussions on several issues, including usage of the specified variety of plastic cement. for construction of the diaphragm wall and other works.

Another two international experts will virtually join Saturday’s discussions, which will be attended by engineers and officials of the water resources department from AP, officials/experts from Polavaram Project Authority, Central Water Commission and Central Soil and Materials Research Station, among others.

The international experts are expected to stay put till February 4 to review the progress of the project works.
