Chittoor cops’ smart solution to avoid break-ins
Chittoor: Chittoor police have launched a transformative initiative to boost residential security by distributing nearly 6,500 smart door locks across the district. This tech-driven approach, led by superintendent of police (SP) V.N. Manikanta Chandolu, aims at preventing break-ins and promote advanced security measures inspired by Smart City infrastructure.
The smart locks, crafted as a cutting-edge solution to prevent unauthorised access, come equipped with built-in alarm system that triggers instantly if it is tampered with. Made up of premium, weather-resistant steel, these locks are engineered to withstand harsh conditions such as rain and strong winds. Additionally, their pick-resistant keyholes provide an extra layer of protection, making them a robust defense against theft.
To ensure widespread adoption and understanding, the police organised special awareness camps throughout the district. These sessions, led by senior police officials and SHOs, include live demonstrations of the smart locks’ functionality and guidance on installation, usage and maintenance. Residents were also educated about the complementary security measures such as CCTV cameras and intruder alarms to create a comprehensive home safety framework.
Explaining the ease of use, SP Manikanta highlighted the user-friendly design of the smart locks. “Activation involves securing the shackle into the housing and turning the key which triggers a beep to confirm the lock is armed. If tampered with, the lock emits a loud alarm, alerting the residents of the house immediately”, he explained. Additionally, the locks are equipped with long-lasting, embedded batteries to ensure consistent performance.
Underlining the importance of modern security solutions in today’s rapidly evolving society, SP Manikanta Chandolu said, “Home security is now a fundamental necessity. These smart door locks not only protect against theft but also raise awareness about community safety. We urge everyone to embrace these advanced measures to build a safer district together”.
As part of the initiative, the police have distributed the locks free of cost to underprivileged households while others can purchase them at a subsidised price of less than ₹400. Comparatively, similar locks retail for about ₹600 on online platforms, but bulk procurement by the police has reduced costs significantly.
The Chittoor police also aim to extend the initiative to temples and commercial establishments, encouraging widespread adoption of these smart security solutions.
