Christmas celebrations spark joy in Visakhapatnam and Vijayawada
Visakhapatnam: Christmas celebrations lit up Visakhapatnam and Vijayawada with festive fervour, drawing large crowds to churches and public spaces for religious services, cultural activities, and community events.
In Visakhapatnam, the city came alive with twinkling lights and carol singing. Thousands gathered at churches such as St. Paul’s, St. Anthony’s, and Ross Hill Church, where vibrant nativity scenes and festive decorations set the scene for midnight masses and morning prayers. Local malls added to the festive cheer, setting up elaborate Christmas trees and hosting lucky draws, while Santa Claus made appearances, delighting children with gifts. Online food platforms also contributed to the celebrations, offering complimentary plum cakes and discounts on festive menus.
In local apartments, a new tradition emerged as families engaged in secret gift exchanges, dropping presents at each other's homes. Myra, a resident of Ram Raj Towers, expressed her joy at a communal lunch organised for residents, fostering a spirit of togetherness. The international student community in Visakhapatnam also joined in, attending a special service at Grace Community Church and sharing a festive lunch afterward.
Vijayawada’s churches and cathedrals were equally vibrant, with large crowds attending midnight mass and special prayers on Christmas morning. Iconic sites like Gunadala Matha Shrine, St. Paul’s Basilica, and Philadelphia AG Church were beautifully decorated with cribs and colourful lights. NTR district collector Dr. G. Lakshimisha joined the Christmas prayers at St. Paul’s Basilica, where Bishop T George Carnelious led the service. Throughout the city, carol singing, special lunches, and dinner parties filled the air with joy and goodwill.
The spirit of Christmas was palpable, uniting people from all walks of life in both cities, celebrating love, faith, and community.
