Vijayawada: Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu has promised to resolve the problems faced by chilli farmers in Andhra Pradesh, especially in Guntur district. Corrective steps would follow soon. This was stated here on Wednesday by Telugu Desam floor leader and Narasaraopet MP Lavu Srikrishna Devarayalu.
The MP said he had written a letter to the CM on January 12 and brought the issues of chilli farmers again to the attention of Naidu at the parliamentary party meeting on Tuesday. Naidu promised him speedy action.
The MP hoped that steps will be taken to reduce the debt burden of chilli farmers and suitable assistance provided to the affected farmers. Special teams of agricultural scientists will be formed to control the black thrips disease, he said.
He said new policies will be formulated by the state government to stabilize market prices.
Devarayalu said the main problems faced by chilli farmers across the Guntur district include the 50 per cent decrease in market price per quintal of the chilli varieties compared to last year. With the main crop season expected by the end of February, this loss per quintal is likely to increase further, resulting in an average loss of up to Rs 60,000 per acre per farmer, he informed the CM.
The MP said, “Due to changes in the global market, chilli exports have decreased. This has had a negative impact on farmers. Farmers' income has been further affected by the reduction in crop yield due to the impact of black thrips disease and the increase in the prices of fertilizers and pesticides.
The parliamentarian said the CM, when he heard about these, alerted the griculture, marketing and commerce departments and sought remedial action.
