Deep Depression Moves Inland, Rains Subside in North Andhra
Visakhapatnam: The deep depression over the northwest Bay of Bengal has moved north-northwestward, making landfall near Puri on the Odisha coast between 10:30 am and 11:30 am on Monday. As a result, the persistent rainfall over north coastal Andhra Pradesh came to an end shortly after the system crossed the coast.
According to the IMD Amaravathi report, the system is expected to continue moving northwest across interior Odisha and gradually weaken into a depression by midnight. It will then likely shift west-northwestward across North Chhattisgarh over the next 24 hours.
Under the influence of the system, isolated heavy rain is anticipated in north coastal Andhra Pradesh and Yanam. Additionally, strong surface winds reaching speeds of 30 to 40 km/h may occur in isolated areas of north and south coastal Andhra Pradesh, Yanam, and Rayalaseema.
The report also notes that only strong surface winds are expected from September 11 to September 13.
Dr. S. Karunasagar, senior scientist at IMD Amaravathi, reported that there was no rainfall in Vizianagaram throughout the day, and in districts such as Parvathipuram Manyam, Srikakulam, ASR, Visakhapatnam, and Anakapalle, rain ceased after noon. "The rainfall stopped shortly after the deep depression crossed the Puri coast in Odisha," Dr. Karunasagar noted.
In ASR district, officials reported breaches in streams at nine locations in the Paderu division, and water overflowed onto roads at seven locations in the Chintur division. Kaviti mandal in Srikakulam district recorded the highest rainfall of 9.5 cm from 4:30 am to 8:30 pm on Monday, followed by Kanchili with 7.6 cm, Sompeta with 5.2 cm, and Ichchapuram with 5 cm.
Over the 24 hours ending at 8:30 am on Monday, rainfall amounts included 13.1 cm in Chintapalle (ASR district), 10.4 cm in Ranastalam (Srikakulam), 10.3 cm in Pusapatirega (Vizianagaram), 9.9 cm in Bondapalle (Vizianagaram), and 9.8 cm in Bheemunipatnam (Visakhapatnam).
