Vijayawada: Four days after suspected diarrhoea wreaked havoc in Moghalrajpuram area, the disease has been brought under control, with only two inpatients being treated at the mobile medical health camp set up in the area on Friday.
However, diarrhoea cases are continuing to be reported from Rajiv Nagar, Prajasakthi Nagar and Ragha Nagar, with tens of people falling ill with symptoms of the illness and getting hospitalised.
Multiple deaths have been reported in the last two days.
When contacted, NTR District Medical and Health Officer (DMHO) Dr. S.M. Suhasini said, “Health department has increased medical surveillance across the city. All people falling ill with motions and vomiting cannot be linked to diarrhoea.”
She maintained that change in climatic conditions with soaring temperatures can lead to sunstroke and dehydration, whose symptoms cannot be attributed to diarrhoea.
Officials have tested for water samples from Moghalrajpuram for contamination. Most samples came out negative but a few indicated contamination. The DMHO said, “Out of 110 water samples collected from households, four water samples showed contamination.”
Two people admitted to the Government General Hospital with symptoms of diarrhoea from Moghalrajpuram have been discharged from the hospital on Friday. With this, the number of people getting treatment at government and private hospitals for diarrhoea has come down to five.
CPM leader Ch. Babu Rao, along with party leaders, visited the house of deceased Chowdary Kanakamma, 60, and consoled her family members in Radha Nagar area.
Babu Rao maintained that diarrhoea cases are showing an upward trend in Prajasakthi Nagar and Radha Nagar.
Vijayawada Municipal Corporation (VMC) commissioner Swapnil Dinakar Pundkar inspected the Municipal Head Water Works at Mallikarjunapeta on Friday. He said water samples tested from Head Water Works and households downstream turned negative for contamination.
The VMC chief instructed authorities to remain vigilant about the purity of water supplied to households by the municipal corporation. He advised people to boil the water supplied before drinking it to safeguard their health.
