Eluru to become a horticulture hub: Collector
Kakinada:Eluru collector K. Vetri Selvi on Tuesday instructed officials to make Eluru district a horticulture hub. In this regard, she advised them to take farmers into confidence and educate them on how they can benefit by growing horticulture crops.
The collector, along with horticulture officials, visited Dibbagudem, Garlamadugu and Lakshmipuram in Pedavegi mandal. They observed the novel cultivation methods in horticulture that increase productivity.
She pointed out that horticulture crops are being cultivated over 1.50 lakh hectares in the district. She underlined that the district has favourable conditions for growing oil palm, coco, mango and other fruits.
Oil Palm Centre director Kancharla Suresh said the palm fruit is being cultivated over 2.29 lakhs hectares in Andhra Pradesh, with Eluru district growing oil palm on 80,000 hectares.
Centre scientists M.V. Prasad, K. Manorama, K. Ramachandrudu, G. Ravichandran, horticulture deputy director Rammohan and Micro Irrigation project director Ravi Kumar were among those present.
Vetri Selvi told scientists that results of all their research should reach farmers and benefit them.
