Experts Call for Dehydration Awareness in Vizag

Visakhapatnam: Over the past decade, Andhra Pradesh has faced a significant health crisis, with over 1,788 heat-related deaths reported between 2014 and 2024. Visakhapatnam, commonly known as Vizag, is particularly affected, as extreme heat and humidity continue to rise each year. In April 2024, the city recorded a staggering temperature of 43.4°C, with perceived temperatures often reaching 50°C due to high humidity levels.

To address the growing issue of silent dehydration in Vizag, a seminar was organised on Tuesday. Medical experts emphasised that tackling this health threat requires more than just drinking water. Electrolytes are essential for regulating nerve and muscle activity, particularly in intense heat. The rise in silent dehydration cases has led to local hospitals treating about 5 to 10 individuals daily for severe heat-related conditions.

Dr. Loknath Tripathy, an internal medicine physician, highlighted the importance of meeting increased energy demands in non-diarrhoeal dehydration cases. He noted that while WHO ORS is effective for diarrhoeal conditions, electrolyte drinks with added energy are crucial for non-diarrhoeal dehydration recovery.

Dr. M. V. E. Rama Naidu, also an internal medicine physician, called for greater community awareness and education on recognising the signs and dangers of dehydration, especially for vulnerable groups like the elderly and children.
