Floods: Pawan announces Rs 6 crore donations including Rs 1 crore to CM relief fund
Vijayawada: In generous contributions to the two Telugu states hit by floods, Deputy Chief Minister Pawan Kalyan donated Rs 6 crore and Rs 1 crore each to the AP and Telangana chief ministers' relief funds.
Additionally, he would contribute `1 lakh each to 400 gram panchayats hit by the floods in AP. The donations would be deposited in the bank accounts of the respective gram panchayats, PK said.
He held a teleconference with panchayat raj and rural development officials on Wednesday and reviewed the flood situation and the provision of drinking water, food supply, and sanitation activities in the villages.
Pawan Kalyan said the floods wreaked havoc in six districts, the worst being the NTR district. “Despite challenges, the state government tackled the floods effectively and supported the flood victims in their difficult times,” he said.
He said encroachments into the Budameru flood channel led to the havoc in Vijayawada city. “Over the years, encroachers have occupied 90 per cent of the Budameru flood channel and built permanent structures, hindering the natural flow.”
The deputy CM said successive governments did not prevent encroachments and erection of permanent structures within the water bodies. The encroachments in Budameru thrived in recent times, and the YSRC government did not take any preventive action, he said.
He said panchayat raj roads spanning 233 kilometres and 41 culverts were damaged due to the floods, of which one culvert has already been repaired and restored.
