Floodwaters recede in areas close to Budameru canal

Rescue and relief operations in full swing

VIJAYAWADA: Several areas inundated due to the floodwaters from Budameru canal here continued to remain under water for the third consecutive day on Tuesday. However, the water level receded by 3-4 feet in many stretches. Ajith Singhnagar, Rajarajeshwari Pet, Vambay Colony, Pipula Road, Payakapuram, Jakkampudi YSR Colony and other areas in the Vijayawada Central constituency were bearing the brunt of the flooding.

Many people who were stuck in their homes in flooded areas for the last three days came out and got into boats to move around on Tuesday. The Ajith Singhnagar flyover, which connects flood-affected areas with other parts of Vijayawada city, was crowded. Thousands of people were on a long walk on the flyover with their clothes packed in bags, after they managed to come out of their homes after two days’ ordeal. While some of them went to their relatives' homes in other areas of the city, many were given temporary refuge at the relief centres of the state government.

Complaints came from the affected people that the relief materials were not reaching many tail-end places in the flood-affected areas. People from such locations came out of their homes in boats and walked 2-3 kilometres to buy water bottles and food, and to their homes caught in the floodwaters.
