Form A Committee to Evaluate Losses to Farmers: Lokayukta

Kurnool: The Lokayukta has instructed the Andhra Pradesh government to form a high-level committee to address concerns raised by farmers in YSR Kadapa district regarding the operations of the Dalmia Cements Factory in Mylavaram mandal. The committee, comprising seven members from various departments, will investigate the impact of the factory's operations, including air and dust pollution affecting crops and water flow disruptions. Villagers from Nawabupeta filed a complaint alleging that collusion between officials and the cement company has led to significant environmental and agricultural damage. A report by superintending engineer-Irrigation departemt highlighted that the factory's construction has obstructed the flow of the River Kundu, exacerbating the situation.

The Lokayukta's deputy director-investigation, who was assigned to the case in January, found elevated levels of pollution in a report submitted in June. Based on these findings, the Lokayukta has recommended that the government assess the situation thoroughly, provide compensation, and implement rehabilitation measures if necessary. Additionally, the Andhra Pradesh Pollution Control Board and agriculture officials have been directed to conduct a joint inspection to evaluate the extent of the damage caused by the factory's operations.
