GoM Formed to Allocate Additional Land for Bhogapuram Greenfield Airport
VISHAKHAPATNAM: A Group of Ministers (GoM) has been formed to evaluate a proposal to allocate an additional 500 acres of land for the Bhogapuram Greenfield Airport.
The GoM, led by finance minister Payyavula Keshav, includes investment and infrastructure minister BC Janardhan Reddy and industries minister TG Bharat. Chief secretary Vijayanand issued orders to this effect.
The GMR Visakhapatnam International Airport Ltd (GVIAL) has proposed the handover of 500 acres of land intended for the Bhogapuram International Airport. GVIAL states that this land is required for city-side development next to the international airport. The government has instructed the committee of ministers to study the socio-economic development aspects of north Andhra as part of the Swarnandhra Vision.
Orders have also been issued to study issues related to high-tech production, ancillary services and the establishment of an aviation hub. The GoM has been advised to examine various aspects related to land development to ensure revenue generation after the allotment of land for the GVIAL.
The government has directed the committee of ministers to submit a report as soon as possible.
Meanwhile, the government has allotted 2203 acres of land for development of the Greenfield Airport in Bhogapuram. GVIAL had sought a total of 2703 acres of land in the area. The GoM would study the allocation of the additional 500 acres of land.
The airport construction work is progressing rapidly in Bhogapuram. As part of the first phase, work on the air space, an education zone, an air city, an industrial zone, units manufacturing spare parts, a healthcare zone, and health and hospitality sectors will be completed.
The airport aims to serve 6.8 lakh passengers annually, with plans to increase this to 40 lakhs in stages.
