Nellore: Power minister Gottipati Ravi Kumar on Saturday alleged that the gates of the Gundlakamma reservoir were deliberately damaged during the YSRC government’s rule to facilitate illegal sand mining.
He accused YSRC leaders of plundering sand worth crores of rupees, putting local livelihoods and irrigation infrastructure at risk.
Addressing the media during his tour in Addanki segment, Ravi Kumar stated that after the alliance government assumed power, immediate steps were taken to allocate funds for repairs to the Gundlakamma project.
As part of the revival efforts, 3 TMCs of water has been stored in the reservoir and 20 lakh fishlings were released to support the livelihoods of communities dependent on the water body.
“We are committed to protecting the farmers and residents of villages around Gundlakamma,” the minister said, highlighting the government’s proactive measures to enhance irrigation and livelihood infrastructure in the region.
The minister conducted an extensive tour of the Addanki constituency, beginning with special prayers at the revered Eerla Gangamma temple in Ballikurava. The visit was followed by a key review meeting with members of local irrigation water users’ committees.
During the discussions, the minister directed officials to expedite the desilting and repair works of canals and ensure their readiness before the end of summer.
He emphasised that irrigation canals must be fully operational for farmers by the beginning of the cultivation season to prevent disruptions in agricultural activities.
