Granite quarries destroying our lives: Anakapalli Tribals

Visakhapatnam: Tribal women of Anakapalli planted saplings on potholed roads in Ravikamatham mandal on Sunday, in a symbolic protest against the local granite quarries which they blame for destroying their lives.

Holding empty water pots, the Tribals said the environment department's proposed Gram Sabha on Monday must be cancelled as it is an excuse to give away more land for mining.
They said plans are afoot for a private mining enterprise to start operations in an 8-acre area in Nagalla Konda village, Survey Number 1 under Kotnabilli, Ravikamatham mandal.
A protest leader, Tadi Achiyamma, highlighted the negative impacts of mining.
"A 12-km road from Chinnapasila to T-Ajjapuram panchayat, constructed in 2008 at cost of `2 crore and 80 lakhs, turned into a muddied road in 2013 due to the mining activities. The company, which obtained permits for six coloured granite quarries in the revenue area of Kotnabilli, uses heavy vehicles weighing 60 tons on the roads, leading to potholes which collect water rainwater. Ambulances cannot use these roads, posing a serious threat to the health and safety of the local community," she said.
The Tribals said they were misled to believe that the arrival of granite quarries would bring local employment opportunities, medical camps, and good water.
"However, local tribal labourers are paid low rates, our houses are removed and loud noises from the quarries deprive us sleep at night. Additionally, goats are not allowed to graze and dust from the quarries lead to respiratory problems for many," they said.
The tribes also alleged that the mining companies ignore their complains.
The Tribals said if a new quarry comes up, it will be at the cost of their lives.
Kotnabilli village has a population of 268 people. "When residents need to go to the hospital due to health issues, it becomes challenging to find transportation. In the past, an auto charged `50 per person for this service but now autos charge `500 per person for this service," they said.
