Growing traffic woes: Call for second flyover in Ajit Singh Nagar

Vijayawada:Increased vehicular traffic and frequent traffic jams during peak hours have strengthened a demand for construction of a second flyover in the Ajit Singh Nagar area here.

The existing flyover, set in the late 90s, is unable to accommodate the growing volume of vehicles, leading to frequent traffic gridlocks.

This is the only flyover available for people living on the north side to access the south side of Vijayawada city. Thousands of residents from Singh Nagar, Vambay Colony and nearby residential colonies in the Vijayawada Central Assembly constituency travel through the flyover to reach the city centre for work. , So also the people from Nunna and suburbs extending to Nuzvid.

Recently, local MLA Bonda Umamaheswara Rao raised the issue in the assembly. He urged the government to construct a second flyover to alleviate traffic problems.

Two years ago, residents of Vijayawada, led by the Singh Nagar Second Flyover Saadhana Committee, submitted such representations to the government and the railway authorities. The new flyover is proposed over a railway line.

The committee proposed erection of the second flyover parallel to the existing Singh Nagar flyover and construction of a road under bridge (RUB) at Vambay Colony.

“The number of vehicles plying on the roads has increased manifold since the inauguration of the existing flyover in 1996. Scores of buses, two, three and four-wheeler vehicles use the flyover beyond its carrying capacity, leading to frequent traffic jams,’’ said GV Anjaneyulu, convener of the Saadhana Committee.

The committee has renewed its call to the state government to take immediate steps for erection of the new flyover.
