GST commissioner urges consumers to demand bills

Tirupati: GST commissioner (auditing wing), Andhra Pradesh, P. Anand Kumar on Monday advised consumers to mandatorily obtain bills for their purchases, emphasising that it promotes financial transparency and helps curb tax evasion.

Anand Kumar was speaking to reporters after inaugurating a new commissioner's chamber at the Central Tax Audit Circle Office, near Madras Bus Stand in Nellore.

The commissioner urged consumers to be vigilant, reminding them that demanding a bill is a fundamental right that safeguards both the buyers and the sellers.

Anand Kumar said he assumed responsibilities as the auditing wing commissioner on August 12 and has since been touring the state to strengthen the auditing division.

He mentioned that Central GST Auditing Wing offices are currently operating in Kakinada, Visakhapatnam, Guntur, Nellore, and Tirupati with plans to establish offices in Anantapur and Kurnool soon.

The commissioner revealed that they are conducting audits in all organisations under their jurisdiction and aim to complete GST audits in 532 more institutions this year.

He made it clear that there would be no leniency for those evading taxes or paying less through false accounting. Businesses collecting taxes from the public must remit them to the government without fail, he stressed.

Anand Kumar explained that the GST system was introduced nationwide in 2017 to provide better services to the public. He highlighted that before GST, there were only 70 lakh taxpayers in the country, but now the number has doubled to 1.40 crore. He also noted that the GST system has led to a reduction in the tax burden due to the increased number of taxpayers.

The commissioner emphasised GST's crucial role in establishing India as the third-largest economy in the world, in line with the Viksit Bharat 2047 goal.

He stated that their department aims to simplify the tax payment process and increase the number of taxpayers. Assistant commissioner of Nellore audit circle Ch. Usha Kiran, superintendents M. Srinivasa Rao and other officials were present.
