Vijayawada: Doctors from the Pathology department of Guntur Government General Hospital (GGH) have detected the rare haemoglobin D-Punjab (HbDP) variant in two patients from Palnadu region.
Guntur GGH superintendent Dr. Kiran Kumar disclosed on Monday that the two persons belong to Srirampuram Tanda in Takkellapadu mandal of Palnadu district. The rare combination of sickle cell haemoglobin has been found for the first time in this region.
The superintendent said the rare haemoglobin variant is usually found in Punjab. It has now been detected in blood samples of people who are suffering from anaemia in Andhra Pradesh.
“HbDP can be cured with bone marrow and stem cell therapy,” Dr. Kiran Kumar maintained. He said they are taking measures for cost-effective treatment to cure this genetic anaemia.
Pathology wing head of department Dr. C Aparna and assistant professors Dr. T. Bharat, Dr. Mahesh and Dr. Lakshmi were present.
