Visakhapatnam: The Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation (GVMC) is facing a piquant situation now. While its efforts to help flood victims in Vijayawada were praised, in Visakhapatnam it’s facing a lot of flak for allowing garbage accumulation due to ongoing Ganesh immersion.
Large piles of garbage on the streets have resulted in discomfort and health concerns for Vizag residents. The GVMC has deployed temporary workers and private vehicles to manage the situation, but the problem persists.
GVMC chief medical officer Naresh Kumar told Deccan Chronicle, "1,500 workers have been deployed at Vijayawada. We have hired 800 workers temporarily. However, the situation is challenging, and the community’s concerns are valid."”
Heavy rains in Visakhapatnam have caused problems with garbage piling up across the city. Accumulation of waste has been particularly severe in low-lying areas and beaches like Peddajalaripet, Vasavanipalem, and Jodugullapalem. The situation has led to severe health issues, especially a rise in mosquitoes and rats posing a threat to the well-being of residents.
While the civic body has been criticised for not promptly addressing these issues, the GVMC commissioner said illegal drainage channel construction is exacerbating the problem by obstructing water flow.
