KURNOOL: Many accident victims in Adoni region are continuing to lose their lives with lack of emergency medical facilities and the proposed medical college and hospital at Adoni remaining stalled.
Critical medical cases are not dealt with at the District Government Hospital in Adoni due to the lack of advanced medical equipment and specialised doctors. They are often referred to Bellary in Karnataka or to the Government General Hospital (GGH) in Kurnool for better treatment. Many critical patients lose their lives en route.
In May 2021, then chief minister Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy laid the foundation stone for the medical college at Adoni, along with 13 other medical colleges across the state. But construction of the Adoni medical college has halted midway.
In the last three years, road accidents have claimed the lives of hundreds in Adoni district. In 2022, around 600 people died, 400 in 2023 and 250 in 2024.
According to police and transport officials, autos and two-wheelers account for around 70 per cent of these accidents, with speeding being a major factor. Poor road conditions and the overloading of vehicles also contribute significantly to the high rate of accidents.
“In rural areas, over-crowded auto-rickshaws, overloaded goods vehicles, and excessive speed are common causes of mishaps, often resulting in fatal injuries,” said D. Ranga Rao, a retired police officer from Aspari. A well-equipped hospital in the area would help reduce the fatalities, he added.
