Hyperloop Project to Connect Vizag and Bhogapuram Airport

Visakhapatnam: Some senior engineers here are engaged in a plan to develop a hyper-loop rail network by using magnetic levitation (Maglev) technology so as to provide a seamless connection between the city and the Greenfield Bhogapuram Airport.

Hyperloop technology represents the next generation of sustainable transportation, featuring passenger pods that travel at near-supersonic speeds within low-pressure tubes, which drastically cuts down travel time.

The team is led by the head of department of electrical engineering of AU Engineering College, Prof P Mallikarjuna Rao. The engineers developed a table top model of the hyper-loop system. High speed trains running at a speed of 600km/h to 1,000 km/h is contemplated.

“This initiative aims to enhance regional connectivity, stimulate economic growth by significantly reducing transit times, and solidify Visakhapatnam’s status as a global hub for technological and industrial innovation,” Prof Rao said here on Monday.

"This model is the first of its kind in the world. It will operate on electromagnetic induction, whereas other models in India and globally operate in a vacuum," the professor said.

The hyper-loop system relies on advanced technologies like Magnetic Levitation (Mag-Lev), vacuum tubes, linear electric motors and sophisticated safety and control devices. Such a system is functional in China.

“The hyper loop system can achieve speeds of up to 1000 km/h,” Prof Rao told Deccan Chronicle.

He said lower energy consumption and minimal maintenance costs would result in reduced operational expenses. This would mean affordable ticket prices for passengers.

The system consumes 20 per cent less power than the regular metro rails and needs less space for its operations. With zero direct emissions, it relies on renewable energy.

The design incorporates segmented vacuum systems to minimize energy usage by activating only required sections and employs dynamic pressure management for enhanced safety and efficiency. Unlike metro-focused initiatives, this advanced technology can be scaled and designed for intercity and longer routes, establishing Vizag as a leader in next-generation transportation, Prof Rao said.
