INSV Tarini sets sail for second leg of expedition

Visakhapatnam: The Indian Naval Sailing Vessel (INSV) Tarini has embarked on the second leg of its Navika Sagar Parikrama-II expedition, traveling from Fremantle, Australia, to Lyttelton, New Zealand. According to a press release from ENC Visakhapatnam, the vessel set sail on November 24, 2024, at 08:30 AM, with an enthusiastic crowd bidding farewell to the crew and wishing them a safe journey.

Navika Sagar Parikrama-II, which began on October 2, 2024, under the leadership of Chief of Naval Staff Admiral Dinesh K. Tripathi, is a groundbreaking initiative featuring a dual-handed circumnavigation of the globe by two women officers of the Indian Navy, Lieutenant Commander Dilna K and Lieutenant Commander Roopa A. In the first leg of the journey, they covered an impressive 4,900 nautical miles in 39 days before reaching Fremantle on November 9.
During their stay in Fremantle, the crew received a warm welcome from the Consul General of India in Perth, officials from the Royal Australian Navy, and members of the Indian diaspora, including Indian Armed Forces veterans. The visit included activities aimed at promoting gender equality and global maritime cooperation, highlighting India’s commitment to women’s empowerment and maritime exploration.
The crew was honored as special invitees at the Western Australia Parliament, where they engaged with parliamentarians and attended a session recognizing their expedition. They also conducted system checks and repairs on Tarini with support from a shore team from India and replenished provisions for the next leg of their journey.
Mentored by Commander Abhilash Tomy (Retd), the crew is preparing for their passage across significant maritime landmarks such as Cape Leeuwin and Tasmania. This phase will cover approximately 3,400 nautical miles (6,300 kilometers) over an estimated 20 days, facing challenges such as varying weather conditions and dropping temperatures.
Beyond their maritime endeavors, the crew inspired young minds by visiting local schools and naval bases, emphasizing resilience and innovation in the pursuit of dreams. As they continue their journey across the Southern Ocean toward Lyttelton, INSV Tarini stands as a testament to India’s rich maritime heritage and its commitment to empowering women in all fields.
