Garbage Thrown Into Mayor’s Home in Protest Against ‘Collection Tax’

Kadapa: Kadapa urban politics has taken interesting twists following attempts by the Telugu Desam and YSR Congress parties to maintain their hold over the district headquarters.

TD supporters threw garbage into the residence of Kadapa Mayor Suresh Babu of the YSRC in a show of protest against his comments on ‘Chetta Pannu’ and the civic rule that every household should pay a garbage tax to the corporation.

TD MLA Madhavi Reddy had called on people not to pay tax for the door-to-door collection of garbage. In response, the mayor stressed the need for payment of the tax to the corporation and warned that the civic staff would not collect garbage if the residents refused to pay ‘Chetta Pannu’.

The issue turned political and the mayor's comments raised a controversy. The TD MLA called on the public to dump the garbage at the mayor's residence.

In response, on Tuesday, a group of people reached the mayor’s residence along with bagfuls of garbage from their houses and threw these into the residence of the mayor.

A tense situation prevailed at the mayor's residence. YSRC cadres staged a protest demanding action against the TD MLA who provoked her supporters to create nuisance.

Mayor Suresh Babu, who was away, rushed to his residence after the incident and complained that the police did not stop the protesters from such unruly acts.

Notably, collection of garbage from door to door was stopped after the alliance government was voted to power and MLA Madhavi Reddy called on the people not to pay ‘Chetta Pannu’ to the corporation.
