Chicken prices plummet during Karthika Maasam

Visakhapatnam: Chicken prices in Andhra Pradesh have witnessed a significant decline with the onset of Kartika month, a period marked by religious observance and dietary restrictions in the Hindu calendar.

Market data shows prices have dropped by nearly 50% compared to rates from last 10 days. Skinless chicken, which previously commanded Rs 270-300 per kilogram is now available for Rs 200, reflecting the sharp downturn in demand during this religious period.

"Raw chicken is now priced at Rs 160, skinless at Rs 200, and boneless at Rs 210," says S.K. Farooq, a broiler seller at Visakhapatnam's Ram Nagar market. "We expect prices to remain low or decrease further in the coming days."
The price decline coincides with Kartika month, considered one of the holiest periods in the Hindu lunar calendar. "This month holds special spiritual significance," explains Ravana Murthy, a priest at the Sai Baba temple. "Many devotees observe fasting and abstain from non-vegetarian food as part of their spiritual practices."
The traditional abstinence from meat during Kartika month is supported by health considerations as well. Dr. Suman Das notes, "The body's metabolism typically undergoes changes during this season. Many people opt for lighter, vegetarian options as they are easier to digest compared to non-vegetarian foods."
