A woman died in a leopard attack on Tuesday in Nandyal and the deceased was identified as Shaik Mehroon Bi, the former vice-sarpanch of Pachharla village in the Nallamala forest area under Sirivella mandal.
The leopard attacked her when she went into the forest to collect firewood. When she hadn't returned by evening, her family members searched for her in the forest. They found the leopard attacking her, inflicting fatal wounds to her head with its sharp claws.
The family members initially escaped but later returned with sticks and other weapons, causing the leopard to flee. Wildlife wing senior official Anurag Meena, local forest range officer Eswaraiah and others visited the spot after the incident and began an investigation.
Sirivella sub-inspector B. Suresh confirmed that the woman died due to severe injuries and visited the spot. Recently, another woman from the village, Shaik Bibi, narrowly escaped with minor injuries when a leopard attacked her while she was sleeping outside her house. Forest officials have shifted the body to the village for further processes and have arranged CCTV cameras and a cage in the forest area to capture the leopard.
