Tense situation prevailed in Rahmath Nagar area of Anantapur city on Friday when a group of local sari designers attacked workplaces of their Kolkata-based competitors. The locals had got upset over Kolkata people offering saris at lower prices. They also ordered them to return to Kolkata.
At least 20 families and professional designers from Kolkata migrated to Anantapur a few years ago. They set up small shops in the Rahmath Nagar area offering maggam works, where locals had already been operating similar units.
Upset over the Kolkata designers offering goods at much lesser prices, the locals attacked them and damaged their looms.
The Kolkata-based workers have approached the Two Town police for protection.
“We have been working in the area for past three years. We have worked hard to establish ourselves. How can the locals attack and damage our looms and ask us to leave Anantapur,” Saleem, a designer from Kolkata asked.
