Major scientific feat at AU: PG students isolate stem cells

They have isolated the endometrial stem cells from menstrual waste and succeeded in printing those stem cells into a 3D shape.

Visakhapatnam: Two post-graduate students from the biotechnology department in the College of Science and Technology under Andhra University have achieved a significant feat.

They have isolated the endometrial stem cells from menstrual waste and succeeded in printing those stem cells into a 3D shape. The process was guided by senior professor Ravikiran Yedidi in the department’s laboratories.
Wholesome praise went to Mythili Akella and Indu Singupuram, the two final year M.Sc. Biotechnology students as also the professor in the team.
These 3D shapes can be developed into organoids and organs in the future. These can be implanted into the bodies of people with disabilities.
Last summer, Mythili Akella, Balarohitha Sundaram and Lekhana Akula from the same department had filed their works for 3 patents -- on edible insulin and nutraceutical formulation for polycystic syndrome treatment.
Ravikiran Yedidi said these PG students are at a stage close to printing 3D organs by using these endometrial stem cells isolated from menstrual waste. “Our next goal is to 3D print the human pancreas that can be implanted into people with diabetes,” he said.
Vice chancellor Professor G Sasibhushana Rao and registrar Professor EN Dhanamjaya Rao congratulated the students and Professor Ravikiran Yedidi for this achievement.
