Minister lays foundation for leather unit in Prakasam

Kurnool: Social welfare minister Dola Sribala Veeranjaneya Swamy said the state government is focusing on industrial development in the western region of Prakasam district, after performing bhoomi puja for the Leather Park on Saturday. The minister along with Lidcap chairman Pilli Manikyala Rao and Giddalur MLA M. Ashok Reddy also laid the foundation stone for a road from Ongole-Nandyala road to the project site, costing Rs 70 lakh.
Speaking on the occasion, the minister said the footwear unit would be a major contributor to job creation and added that the state government aimed to generate 20 lakh jobs through industrial growth. He also said that investments totalling `6.50 lakh crore have already been brought in, including a renewable power project in Kanigiri and refineries in Kandukuru and Ramayapatnam areas, which can create 4 lakh job opportunities. The minister added that the government will encourage SC and ST communities to establish industries and assured that Lidcap lands would not be alienated.
Lidcap chairman P. Manikyala Rao mentioned that Rs 5.75 crore and 25 acres of land have been allocated for the leather industry. He also indicated the possibility of other allied industries setting up in the area and committed to supplying shoes and leather goods to government departments if requested.
MLA M. Ashok Reddy suggested that a leather processing unit be established in the area, which has a large population of tanners, SCs, and STs, to further support their development. Local public representatives and officials attended the programme.
