Nabard launches livelihood project for Yanadhi community
Vijayawada: The Andhra Pradesh regional office of National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD) has sanctioned a project titled – Ecosystem-Based Livelihood Enhancement of Yanadhi Tribal Community Dependent on Mangroves in Krishna district, Andhra Pradesh.
Special chief secretary (Agriculture) Budithi Rajsekhar inaugurated the ambitious project benefiting the Yanadhi tribes of Koduru and Nagayalanka mandals on Friday at Nagayalanka village nestled on the scenic backwaters of Krishna River.
The project is being implemented in collaboration with Praja Pragathi Seva Sangham (PPSS), Machilipatnam.
Speaking on the occasion, the special CS said this project is innovative, unlike traditional Maa Thota ventures centred on orchard development. He highlighted that the project for Yanadhis will focus on fisheries and aquaculture, offering substantial benefits for the tribal community.
At the event, officials of NABARD, other banks and line departments distributed the first phase of resources under the project to Yanadhi fisherfolk, including 10 boats equipped with nets and iceboxes, as well as gum boots and gloves to 55 beneficiaries.
NABARD chief general manager (CGM) M.R. Gopal pointed out that this initiative will empower 400 Yanadhi tribal families. In all, 30 boats, complete with nets and ice boxes, will be provided to 150 individuals (five families per boat). Further, 30 cage culture units will benefit 180 families (six families per unit). In addition, development of aquaculture ponds will provide income for 30 families. A pen culture unit will be set up for 10 families. The project will also include construction of a feed unit for aquaculture, establishment of 20 nurseries, and provision of five community water tanks to ensure safe drinking water in Koduru and Nagayalanka mandals, the CGM stated.
On the occasion, a coffee table book chronicling the success stories of FPOs curated by NABARD, Andhra Pradesh regional office, and a project brochure prepared by PPSS were unveiled.
