Vijayawada: Chief Minister Nara Chandrababu Naidu on Sunday disclosed that a preliminary report on damage caused due to heavy rains and floods has been sent to the centre, seeking ₹6,880 crore as relief.
Speaking to media, he said that 28 people had lost their lives in the floods. In particular, he underlined that a permanent solution will be found for the recurring floods in Budameru rivulet of Vijayawada.
The CM asked people in the state, particularly north Andhra, to remain alert, as heavy rains are likely to occur in many places in the coming two days. He directed authorities to clean canals, ponds and drains so that water flows freely, without causing any floods. He underlined that property loss can be minimised by taking up proactive measures.
The Chief Minister suggested that drones be used to assess crop damage, apart from supplying food and medicines to victims in the flood-affected areas.
With regard to illegal constructions on drains, including Budameru, he said stern action will be taken against people involved in illegal activities with the support of politicians.
Earlier, Chandrababu Naidu held a teleconference with district collectors on rains in the state due to low pressure in the Bay of Bengal. He said restrictions should be imposed on people crossing streams during floods, so that no lives are lost
Eluru district collector informed the CM that more than two thousand people have been moved to rehabilitation centres and are being provided food.
Chandrababu Naidu also visited the flood-affected areas of Vijayawada on Sunday. He went to Prakasam Barrage and inspected the repair works due to damage caused to the barrage gates by stranded boats.
He inspected the cleaning of roads by fire engines in Kummaripalem centre. From there, he went to Jakkampudi Colony on a Poclain. The area is still in knee deep water.
Later the CM reached the Collectorate via Chittinagar Centre, Pipula Road and BRTS Road. He reviewed with officials the situation as witnessed by him during his visit of the flood-affected areas.
