NELLORE: Providing a significant boost to the deep-sea fishing sector, six fishermen from the southern coastal region of AP have placed an order for two steel deep-sea fishing boats with a dockyard in Nagapattinam of Tamil Nadu.

The fishermen performed a puja before construction of the steel boats commenced at the dockyard. Each boat will be equipped with a high-speed 650 HP engine and deployed off the Nellore district coastline.

Nellore district authorities sanctioned these high-speed boats when fishermen from various coastal villages in Nellore, Prakasam, and Tirupati districts met in Nellore a few days ago.

Those present at the meeting included fishermen representatives and officials from the Fisheries department, including Nellore district Fisheries assistant director Chand Basha. Fisheries joint director K. Shanti coordinated the programme, according to an official press release.

District collector Himanshu Shukla has released an initial advance of ₹30 lakh towards fabrication of the two boats. Officials said the initiative is aimed at enhancing the deep-sea fishing capacity and improving livelihoods of local fishermen.
