NGO, GVMC Push for Eco-friendly Ganapati Idols
VISHAKHAPATNAM: As the city gears up for Ganesh Chaturthi, local organiaations and educational institutions urged residents to embrace eco-friendly practices. The Green Climate Team NGO, led by its founder secretary JV Ratnam, is spearheading a campaign to promote use of clay idols over traditional plaster of paris (POP) . Ratnam emphasised the importance of environmental responsibility stating, "Let's live in harmony with nature and choose clay idols for Ganesh Chaturthi," he said after creating clay Ganesha idols at private educational institutions on Tuesday morning.
The Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation (GVMC) Commissioner, Sampath Kumar also joined the initiative encouraging 30 educational institutions to make clay idols with their students. He highlighted the harmful effects of POP, plastic, chemicals, and heavy metal-coloured Ganapati idols on the environment. "By opting for clay idols, we can contribute to the conservation of our water resources," the commissioner added. He urged the public to be mindful of their choices and prioritise the well-being of the planet. Several educational institutions participated in the awareness program.
