Outrage in Vizag as GVMC fells tree on flimsy pretext
A protest was held here on Tuesday by the Climate Front Vizag members and college students against the felling of several tree by the GVMC on July 1.
The GVMC action was reportedly based on word from a local politician.
According to reports, the tree was cut down on an assumption that it might get uprooted. The politician reportedly tried to snatch the phones from Climate Front Vizag members who questioned the decision.
"Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere," said Oindrila, a member of Climate Front Vizag. "Every tree is precious, and we cannot allow them to be cut down based on illogical beliefs and convenience."
The protest rally highlighted the rising concern over tree-felling in Vizag. The groups claim trees are being targeted for the "smart city projects" and other development initiatives. They pointed out the violation of court orders mandating breathing space around trees for their survival.
"If we start cutting trees based on illogical beliefs, we'll be left with a concrete desert," warned Jayshree Hatangadi. "We've just faced the wrath of heatwaves. It's time we come forward and save each and every tree!"
