Visakhapatnam: 25-year-old Javvadi Chiranjeevi wanted to take his pregnant wife to hospital on Thursday. He instead landed in King George Hospital mortuary, being one of the 17 workers who died in the reactor blast at Escientia Pharma at Atchutapuram in Anakapalli mandal on Wednesday afternoon.

“I wanted him to take me to the hospital on Wednesday itself, as I was not feeling well. But he insisted on working, saying we will visit the hospital on Thursday, his weekly off. He also wanted to discuss the name to be given to our baby. But he didn’t turn up,” said 20-year-old Neela Devi, who is six months into her pregnancy.

Neela Devi continued sobbing, while her mother-in-law and other relatives tried consoling her.

“I fought my parents to marry Chiranjeevi. We borrowed money for the marriage function. We were very happy. He called me every day after his shift saying he is coming home. But yesterday, there was no call,” said the distraught wife.

Chiranjeevi was a native of Darlapudi village in S. Rayavaram mandal of Anakapalle district. He was an ITI-certificate holder and worked as a fitter at Laurus Labs in Parawada of Anakapalle district, drawing Rs 16,000 per month. He joined Escientia about a year ago on a higher salary of Rs 18,000.

“I lost my brother due to negligence of Escientia management. I want my brother back, will the company bring him back,” asked Chiranjeevi’s elder brother J. Appala Konda. He said they got to know of the blast while watching the news on TV on Wednesday evening. “Management of the company did not even inform us about the incident and death of Chiranjeevi,” he pointed out.
