Polavaram Capacity Reduction Opposed in LS

Vijayawada: YSR Congress MP Midhun Reddy voiced strong opposition to the proposed reduction in the capacity of the Polavaram project, urging the government not to compromise its original design. During the debate in the Lok Sabha, he emphasised that the project, initially designed to provide water for irrigation and drinking purposes to 7.5 lakh acres, was originally set to deliver 194 TMC of water. However, budget proposals suggest reducing the capacity to 115 TMC, which would significantly limit its effectiveness, providing water to only 3.2 lakh acres.
Midhun Reddy labelled this reduction as a grave injustice to farmers and the people of Andhra Pradesh, asserting that the YSRC and Telugu Desam MPs would unite to fight this decision. He stressed that the Polavaram project’s original capacity must be maintained as per the division agreement. He further highlighted the lack of special status for Andhra Pradesh and the government's failure to honour its promises, including reduction in the capacity of the Polavaram project. He also questioned how water would be supplied to regions like Banakacharla and Rayalaseema if the capacity is reduced.
On the issue of education, Midhun Reddy raised concerns over the gradual removal of English medium in government schools. He pointed out that proficiency in English is essential for securing corporate jobs abroad and advocated for continued teaching of both English and Telugu in schools. He raised concerns over privatisation of the Visakhapatnam Steel Plant, calling for its cessation. He further advocated for direct talks with the Jindal Group regarding the Kadapa Steel Plant.
