Polavaram work to be expedited by deploying 3rd trench cutter in April

The authorities started execution of the D-wall from January 18 and so far, 18 meters of construction have been completed out of the targeted 1,415 meters.

Vijayawada: The water resources department will expedite the execution of the new diaphragm wall of the Polavaram project by deploying one more trench cutter in addition to the existing two for laying the foundation of the D-wall.

The authorities started execution of the D-wall from January 18 and so far, 18 meters of construction have been completed out of the targeted 1,415 meters. They intend to speed up the work further as the construction of D-wall is targeted to be completed by the end of 2025.

The third trench cutter will be deployed on April 1 to expedite the work. The trench cutter takes up excavation with precision and the excavation will be taken up until it hits the rocks so that the excavated portion will be filled up with concrete that serves as a foundation for the construction of the D-wall.

The Polavaram project superintending engineer R. Ramachandra Rao said, “We are taking up execution of D-wall as per schedule and we intend to expedite it further by deploying the third trench cutter so that we can complete the whole part of D-wall by the end of 2025.”

Meanwhile, the authorities are looking at the coming rainy season which causes the Godavari river to witness floods from July to October/November, in order to continue the works uninterrupted. They have come up with plans and designs to take up dewatering in the ‘Deep Valley Portion’ to avoid any trouble.

The D-wall is being taken up at an estimated cost of Rs 1,000 crore in parallel to the damaged D-wall at six meters towards the upstream of Godavari river. The authorities will be taking up simultaneous works in a phased manner for the D-wall and ECRF dam.
