9,880 kilos of maize feed, 3,000 kilos of protein feed, 21,000 kilos of shell girds and 82,674 kilos of broken rice brawn, which had been stored at the poultry farms, also buried

KAKINADA: In the aftermath of bird flu in the “red zone” Tanuku mandal of West Godavari district, authorities have buried 24,569 birds of six poultry farms near the Velpur village in a scientific manner in the presence of Revenue, Animal Husbandry and Civil Supplies officials.

West Godavari district collector Ch. Nagarani said apart from the birds, they have also buried into the ground 9,880 kilos of maize feed, 3,000 kilos of protein feed, 21,000 kilos of shell girds and 82,674 kilos of broken rice brawn, which had been stored at the poultry farms.

The collector instructed poultry farmers to sanitise and disinfect their poultry sheds with the required chemicals on their own under the guidelines and supervision of the animal husbandry department officials.

In East Godavari district, collector P. Prashanthi said the avian influenza is now under control. She said 18 samples of poultry birds had been sent to laboratories and their results have come negative. She underlined that 17 rapid response teams are continuing to monitor the situation. She maintained that they will continue to check samples once every 15 days for three months to ensure that bird flu has been controlled.

The collector clarified that supply of eggs to anganwadi centres and schools has been stopped for the time being. She, however, underlined that any remnants of the virus would perish when eggs or meat are cooked.

Prashanthi said antiviral medicines have been made available at all health centres in the district. House-to-house surveys are continuing within the radius of three kilometres from poultry farms to check whether the virus has affected humans, she added.
