Kurnool: Noted archaeologist Dr E. Sivanagireddy, CEO of Pleach India Foundation, expressed concern that ancient sculptures from Rashtrakuta period (9th century CE) lay neglected in the bushes at Nayakallu village in Kalluru mandal of Kurnool district.
During his visit on Sunday as part of the ‘Preserve Heritage for Posterity’ awareness programme, Dr Reddy found several sculptures on the village’s outskirts in a state of neglect. They include a Shiva Dwarapalaka, Mahishasuramardini, a hero stone, and a Nandi, all carved in the Rashtrakuta style, showcasing the craftsmanship of that era.
He also noted that two temples built in the Kadamba Nagara style, along with a beautifully-carved black basalt Nandi are lying hidden among thorny bushes.
He requested villagers to protect these heritage pieces and suggested relocating them to the village, placing them on pedestals with proper labels for future generations to appreciate.
