Rain Due to Fengal Fills Up Five Dams in Tirupati

Tirupati: Cyclone Fengal has caused incessant rainfall over past three days on the hill town of Tirumala, leading to all its five major dams—Papavinasanam, Akasaganga, Gogarbham, Kumaradhara, and Pasupudhara—nearing their full capacity.

Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD) authorities said water reserves that have built up due to the cyclone will be sufficient to meet the temple town’s requirements for over 200 days.

Papavinasanam Dam, the largest in Tirumala, has reached a level of 694.25 metres, just shy of its 697.14-metre full capacity. It is currently holding 4,345 lakh gallons of water, against its full storage capacity of 5,240 lakh gallons.

Gogarbham Dam has reached its full capacity of 2,833 lakh gallons, prompting authorities to partially open its floodgates to release water downstream. Water levels at Akasaganga Dam have reached 857.85 metres, compared to its full level of 865 metres. Its current storage is 306.50 lakh gallons against the total capacity of 685 lakh gallons.

The twin dams of Kumaradhara and Pasupudhara are nearing their full capacity. Kumaradhara’s water level stands at 891 metres, holding 2,372.76 lakh gallons, while Pasupudhara is at 896.40 metres with 950.39 lakh gallons.

Heavy rains have led to water overflowing at the Malawadai Gundam and Kapilateertham falls, creating a picturesque sight for devotees and locals. However, due to foggy conditions and safety concerns, access to popular spots like Papavinasanam and Silathoranam has been restricted.

The incessant rains triggered minor landslides at the 15th and 14th km marks along the second ghat road. TTD has cleared the debris using JCBs to ensure there is no disruption to traffic.

TTD officials, led by additional executive officer Ch. Venkaiah Chowdary, have reviewed the situation. They have initiated emergency measures, including removal of weakened trees in landslide-prone areas.

“We are closely monitoring the situation to ensure safety of devotees. We request everyone to cooperate with the temporary restrictions,” a TTD official stated.

Devotees have been advised to follow safety protocols and avoid restricted areas until further notice.
