Rains Damage 124 Water Projects in Combined Vizag District

Visakhapatnam: Recent heavy rains and severe wind storms have caused significant damage to many structures of the water resources department in the combined Visakhapatnam district.

According to a preliminary estimate of the department, 18 large, medium and small-scale projects, apart from ponds, have been damaged in Visakhapatnam district, 105 in Anakapalle and one in Alluri Sitarama Raju district, totalling to 124.

It is estimated that ₹50 crore will be required to undertake 136 repairs at these 124 projects.

A loss of ₹3.96 crore has been incurred at 18 structures of the water resources department in Vizag. It is estimated that ₹25.55 lakh will be required for temporary repairs and ₹3.71 crores for permanent repairs.

Much more funds are needed to repair the damaged water structures in Anakapalle and Alluri Sitarama Raju districts.

The loss reported by the minor irrigation section of Anakapalle district is ₹26.04 crore. In the Narsipatnam division, it is ₹9.37 crore. The department has proposed an expenditure of ₹2.14 crore for emergency works in the Narsipatnam division and ₹23.9 crore for permanent works.

Officials have sent proposals of ₹1.8 lakh, which are urgently needed for the Tandava project under major irrigation.

The department has also proposed ₹28.6 lakh for emergency works and ₹1.24 crore for permanent works for the Raiwada, Konam and Pedderu reservoirs in the Chodavaram region, which come under the medium projects.
