Visakhapatnam: Rains accompanied by gale winds lashed many parts of north Andhra on Tuesday evening, uprooting trees and electric poles. The strong winds also led to cancellation of two flights.
Sources said Hyderabad to Vizag Indigo flight and Bangalore to Vizag Airindia were diverted to other airports.
In Visakhapatnam, thick clouds overcast the sky and later gale winds and rain lashed many parts, particularly in Seethammadhara area where a tree crashed on the Visakhapatnam North MLA and BJP leader P Vishnu Kumar Raju’s car parked outside his home.
According to the MLA, several trees in different wards were seen leaning dangerously, creating fear among local residents. “I had repeatedly brought the issue to the notice of horticulture department officials and urged them to identify unsafe trees and take immediate preventive measures,” he said.
Reports said several parts of Visakhapatnam district experienced heavy rainfall in the evening after a sudden change in weather conditions that brought relief from intense heat and humidity.
Areas including Maharanipeta, Bheemunipatnam, Narsipatnam and Gopalapatnam experienced strong winds followed by heavy showers.
The district had recorded high temperatures during the morning hours, while humid conditions caused considerable discomfort to residents throughout the day. However, the sudden evening rainfall led to a noticeable drop in temperature and provided much-needed relief to people struggling with the summer heat.
Residents welcomed the change in weather, saying the rain offered respite from the oppressive conditions prevailing over the past few days. Weather fluctuations accompanied by gusty winds were reported from several localities across the region.
In Anakapalli, trees and electric poles were uprooted in several places blocking the important roads. The police and locals swung into action to remove the trees from the roads.
