Rains Trigger Landslides, Cause Traffic Disruptions in Nandyal District
Kurnool: Many areas in Nandyal district experienced heavy rains and landslides, causing boulders to fall on the Srisailam-Hyderabad road. This has prompted officials to halt the entry of people into the Srisailam temple town.
Traffic along Atmakur-Dornala and Dornala-Srisailam routes has been suspended.
Numerous rivers in Nandyal district are overflowing, disrupting transportation. Srisailam mandal recorded the highest rainfall of 11.7 cm over the past two days. Other areas like Kothapalle received 9.4 cm of rain, followed by Nandikotkur 8.8 cm, Jupadu Bungalow 8.7 cm, Atmakur 8.6 cm and Pagidyala 8 cm. The average rainfall in the district over the last 24 hours is 3.7 cm.
Heavy rains have flooded many areas in Atmakur. Traffic between Atmakur and Kottapalli has been suspended due to the overflowing Bhavanashi River. Traffic along the Atmakur-Dudyala and Atmakur-Vadlaramapuram routes also got halted due to overflowing Gundlakamma River. This has caused hardships to the local population.
Due to rains, landslides have been occurring on a 10-km stretch of the Nallamala Ghat road. Police have appealed to devotees and tourists that they temporarily postpone their visit to Srisailam due to risk of accidents. Currently, devotees traveling to Srisailam from Hyderabad are being turned back. Mannanur check post is temporarily closed, according to DSP Srinivas.
Heavy floodwaters are flowing into the Srisailam reservoir from upper catchment areas. Five lakh cusecs of water is reaching the reservoir from Jurala and Sunkesula projects. The same volume is being released through the Srisailam crest gates, with 68,109 cusecs directed to Nagarjuna Sagar. As of 4:30 p.m. on Sunday, water level at the Srisailam reservoir stood at 885 feet, with water storage being 213.8824 TMC, reservoir officials said.
In Nandyal, Kundu, Paleru and Maddileru rivers are in spate. Paleru stream near C-farm village in Mahanandi Mandal is overflowing, prompting police to barricade the road to Mahanandi through Gajulapalle.
District collector G. Raja Kumari inspected the floodwaters in Maddileru Vagu. She instructed officials to alert residents of low-lying areas about the floods in Kundu River.
In Prakasam, Mundlamuru received the highest rainfall of 14 cm, followed by Tripuranthakam 10.6 cm, Naguluppalapadu 9.6 cm, Pullalacheruvu 9.6 cm, and Kurichedu and Thallur 9.4 cm each.
The district's average rainfall over the last 24 hours is 5.8 cm.
