Rare Sighting of Slender Loris in Seshachalam Reserve

Seshachalam Biosphere Reserve is a vital hotspot of biodiversity, home to a thriving population of the slender loris.

Visakhapatnam: Presence of the elusive slender loris has been captured on camera in the Seshachalam Biosphere Reserve of Tirupati.

Said birdman Karthik Sai, "I have been fortunate to capture a rare photograph of the slender loris. Documenting this secretive primate in its natural habitat requires immense patience and perseverance. These lorises, known for their swift and silent movements, often evade the camera, making the sighting truly special."

Seshachalam Biosphere Reserve is a vital hotspot of biodiversity, home to a thriving population of the slender loris (Loris lydekkerianus). These small, nocturnal primates, native to India and Sri Lanka, are known for their unique slow movements and keen nocturnal vision. They primarily inhabit tropical rainforests, scrub forests and semi-deciduous woodlands.

Legally protected under Schedule I of the Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972, slender loris receive the highest level of protection. International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) lists the Red Slender Loris as Near Threatened and the Grey Slender Loris as Endangered, primarily due to habitat loss, poaching and illegal wildlife trade.

Slender loris faces several threats despite finding refuge in the Seshachalam reserve, particularly around Lord Venkateswara’s Temple. Development and mining activities have led to deforestation, reducing their natural habitat. Additionally, these primates are often targeted by illegal pet traders. Many fall victims to vehicles and live wires, as rising temperatures and habitat disturbances push them closer to human settlements.

Environmental activists emphasise that sighting of this elusive species in Seshachalam highlights the importance of preserving their habitat. Conservation initiatives and awareness campaigns are crucial to protecting these primates for future generations.

"As a wildlife photographer, I feel privileged to document such moments, shedding light on the beauty and ecological significance of the slender loris in India's forests," says Karthik.
